Eddie Palmer, Justin Timberlake, a former high school football standout, went from being the town’s hero to a convicted felon, serving 12 years in a state prison. He returns to Louisiana and re-establishes his relationship with Vivian, June Squibb, his grandmother. Palmer is haunted by memories of his glory days and the inquisitive eyes of his small town community as he tries to keep his head down and make a quiet life for himself. When Vivian’s hard-drinking next-door neighbor Shelly (Juno Temple) goes on a protracted binge, she leaves her precocious and distinctive 7-year-old son Sam (Ryder Allen), who is frequently bullied, in Palmer’s reluctant care. Palmer is gradually dragged into a more positive world as he forms a bond with Sam as a result of their common experience of being made to feel different by others around them. Palmer’s life improves, as a romance blossoms between him and Sam’s instructor Maggie (Alisha Wainwright). The three of them embark on an inspiring and surprising journey, but Palmer’s past threatens to tear their new life apart.
